Our Preliminary Task was to create a short continuity clip showing our camera work and editing skills in order to complete our opening scene to a film.
The images to the right show our storyboard of our preliminary task.
The first box shows a sketched image of our actress walking up the stairs. The duration says 6 seconds, but in reality is was a couple second longer because otherwise the cut would not flow into the next shot.
The next box was the actress walking up another case of stairs from a different angle. This was a medium shot and there is diegetic sound of footsteps. This shot was hard to get right as the position of her feet had to be the same as the shot before and she had to be standing in the same place.
The third box was a low close up shot of feet walking towards the door. This lasted approximately 4 seconds, it was suppose to last 5 seconds, however, we did not want to see the door in the shot and the extra second was too much.
The next box shows an image of the girl walking into the door. There is an arrow to show the angle which she is walking into the room. We had to film this shot very carefully when she was opening the door to make sure that it is opening in this shot and closing when she walks through the door to make the cut look clean.
The next box is an error as it shows where the camera was going to be positioned, however we changed this because otherwise the cut into the next shot looked incorrect, as it broke the 180 degree rule, therefore we moved the camera to the other side of the actress. The shot was a medium tracking shot and you hear the noise of footsteps and the door closing. Again, we cut 1 second of this shot so it lasted 3 seconds, instead of the estimated 4 seconds.
In the 6th box, it is the beginning of a shot reverse shot. There is conversation between the girl and boy and this scene has a duration of 4 seconds. We originally wrote 5 seconds on our storyboard, however, when we filmed the shot, the conversation was slightly shorter as they spoke very smoothly to make it naturalistic.
In the second to last box, it shows the reverse so the camera is facing the girl. She then replies to the boys dialogue. This lasted 7 seconds and it shows our camera skills by using a shot reverse shot.
Finally, in the last box, there is the final shot of the boy talking to the girl and then saying that he has to go, ending the preliminary video. This lasts 7 seconds and is realistic as he looks at his watch and realises he has to leave, therefore it is a smooth ending.
All of the transitions in our video were straight cuts because it has to be realistic. Also, some of the speech in the video is slightly different to the script on the storyboard to make it more natural and flowing. We kept to the 180 degree rule and all our sound was diegetic throughout including the sound of the footsteps and the speech.
